Beauty In Color:
5 Beauty Truths
by Daria V. Wright
Some trends in beauty are here today, gone even faster. But who has time for fly by night fads? This month, I’ve rounded up five beauty truths to honor throughout your lovely lifetime.
1. Chipped nail polish is NOT in
An article in the New York Times last year declared chipped nail polish as an official trend. Don’t believe it, ever. Newly lacquered nails scream sophistication; and speaking of NY, my favorite nail shade is Big Apple Red ($9 at opi.com). At the very first sign of distress to my perfect paint job, I use Cutex Nail Polish Remover Pads ($3, drugstore.com), always conveniently tucked away in my cosmetics bag for a quick fix.
2. Bad Posture makes you look frumpy. Really frumpy.
I’ve personally found that carrying a great big bag curtails slouching, but standing tall seems to be a real chore for most, sans dancers and yoga enthusiasts. Thanks to the iposture device. This nifty microchip worn close to the skin of the chest gently vibrates whenever there is a deviation from your desired posture. For more information on how this genius product works, visit the site ($50, iposture.com).
3. Don’t be Flaky
Yes, the flakes resting on your shoulder and in your hair are quite noticeable. African American hair types can be a lot drier due to relaxers, product buildup, and the general composition of our hair. When flakes begin to surface, I call the Doctor-- Dr. Miracles that is. The products are stimulating, plus they leave my scalp feeling refreshed, conditioned, and healed ($8 and up at drmiracles.com).
4. Moderation is Key
An over glossed pout, and dry parched lips are equally bad. Over glossed lips look gooey, sticky, and are less than foxy. My suggestion is to use just enough gloss to add allure to your pucker, but never so much that they don’t look kissable. Parched lips can be cured with a simple recipe of brown sugar and olive oil. Rub your lips together for about 20 seconds, and rinse. Repeat when necessary.
5. A Hairy Situation
Facial hair is a small, yet annoying, part of life. I haven’t fully committed to the idea of laser hair removal yet, but I find that depilatory cream for the face gives me the instant gratification that I’m seeking. I prefer Sally Hansen’s Crème Hair Remover for the Face ($6, drugstore.com). It removes all of my undesired facial hair without causing adverse reactions to my acne prone skin.
