DIY Beauty

Who says you need an expert for a professional finish? This month, I’m sharing a few winning tools, and websites that will keep you worthy of admiration.
Makeup
Makeup luminary Sam Fine has premiered his first instructional makeup DVD titled “Fine: The Basics of Beauty.” Fine is my biggest beauty crush, and happened to pen the very first makeup book I ever purchased, “Fine Beauty.” I’ve gushed over his mastery of makeup at demonstrations in both Chicago and New York. In this DVD, Fine serves as an authority in beauty, guiding you through step- by-step techniques -- and solutions -- to the challenges that women of color face in cosmetics application. After the three demonstrations are complete, you’ll have the know- how to master your own unique beauty and to recreate Fine’s “signature face” at home. Get it for $25 at amazon.com.
Haircare
Coif curling cream creators of the best darn curl cream period, Ms Jessie’s Original, now boast the title of creating the best darn instructional videos for the styling and maintenance of curls and kinks. The videos feature instructions on wet and dry twist outs, finger styling, and a method unique to their salon, shingling. I’m a personal devotee to the Crème De La Curl Cleansing crème ($16), and Stretch Silkening Crème ($7 -$38), but you can get all the goods online at missjessies.com.
Homemade Hair Recipes
Over the past 10 years I’ve transitioned between natural and relaxed hair three times. I can appreciate many hairstyles and textures, but there is an unmatched liberation that accompanies wearing your hair in its natural state. It feels grand to be unafraid of getting in the pool, being caught in the rain, or sleeping uncomfortably for the sole purpose of maintaining that perfect style. Trust me, I’ve been there… I’ve referenced motowngirl.com on many occasions when I became confused or frustrated with maintaining my crown, and I sought the site for solace throughout the process of learning to appreciate my tight kinks in all their splendor.
Motown Girl offers homemade recipes for natural hair, as well as styling guides, and plenty of inspiration for those ethnic beauties that are in the process of transitioning.
