All dolled up

Whether blonde and busty à la Barbie or red-haired and apple-cheeked like Raggedy Ann, this season’s fresh face calls to mind the sexy and sweet dolls of days gone by. Designers have drawn inspiration from the classic doll-face and come up with a variety of cosmetic colors and trends that make playing grown-up much more fun.

At the Spring/Summer 2008 Paris Fashion Week designer John Galliano sent models down the runway all-dolled up, literally. From oversized lashes to pink-hued lips and cheeks, the larger-than-life look isn’t wearable, but paired down you can sport this girlish good look on the concrete runway of the real world.

The Look

To get the look, start by thinking unabashedly feminine. Ponder pink in every hue imaginable paired with a veritable palette of pastels from brilliant blue to soft lavender.

Needless to say, applying makeup with a light hand is crucial when applying rich color and that’s why this season sheer is in. Opt for a romantic, princess-inspired look with sheer pastel shades on eyes, cheeks and lips. Or, go bold with a brilliant pink on lips -- not frosty-- paired with rosy cheeks and lids lightly dusted in a pale yellow.

Complement either look with dark lashes but skip the eyeliner to keep color fresh-faced rather than foolishly overdone.

The Goods

Nvey Eco’s comprehensive color collection of certified organic makeup boasts a range of eye shadow shades that hit just the right note. Those looking for a seasonal tone of pink will find their match with three on-trend offerings in Nvey Eco’s Organic Eye Shadow ($24). Choose from 151, a deep rose shimmer, 159, a lighter carnation pink or 169 a pink/peach shimmer. The Nvey Eco collection is available online at econveybeauty.com. I also adore Being True’s limited edition color collection for eyes, cheeks and lips, aptly named Luminance. Featuring six shades ranging from peaches and pinks to a warm yellow-gold called Beaming, the $86 palette is available online at truecosmetics.com.

Not to worry, dolls, you don’t have to break the bank this season to be on trend. Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Blends highlighting blush serves up sheer color washes for cheeks in shades of pink, peach and beyond ($10.99 at drugstore.com). Plus, Neutrogena’s MoistureShine Lip Sheers ($8.99) offer a wardrobe of wearable hues for lips in shades such as Peach Sorbet, Sparkling Fresh Rose, and Sunny Berry. If lip gloss is your thing, opt for Victoria Secret’s Very Sexy Gloss ($12) in Kiss and Tell, a pink glitter or Make Out, a true fuchsia.

And for the true princess in us all, don’t head out without these two sparkling on the road staples in your clutch or beach bag.

Too Faced Cosmetics “Lip of Luxury” is a champagne-infused lipstick available in shades such as Cupcake, a light pink with shimmer and Sex Kitten, a radiant berry. Best of all, each lipstick is housed in a sparkling pink case bejeweled with a faux diamond top. Get ‘em for $18 each at toofaced.com.

Another gleaming staple that’s a must is Colorlab’s Bejeweled Face & Body Shimmer ($25). This dazzling gold compact features intricate designs and rhinestones that make on-the-go touchups simply regal. Visit colorlabcosmetics.com for retailers.
