Gloss·a·ry – Lip Service
By Michelle Carney

We’re eagerly waiting for spring; playing the waiting game with the calendar and testing the waters with spring’s bright colored lipsticks and glittery glosses. But our puckers are left pouting from the chapping and dryness rich-textured products can leave behind when lips are still fragile from winter weather. So how’s this for a happy medium. I dug up a few products that not only serve and protect – they give lips a preview of spring color and shine.

Essential Rose Wax and Natural Rice Oil Extract boost moisture, circulation and actually make lips look rosy. I found this bloomin’ blend in Clarins HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm ($24). Rose petals form a protective layer over the lips while rice extract boosts circulation for extra plumpness – together they give the lips a soft pinkish-hued shine. Beneath the surface, the balm – part of the brand’s HydraQuench Multi-Climate Skin Care line that protects skin from the dehydrating effects of unpredictable climate changes – “recreates a perfect climate” for the lips so they stay hydrated, healed and in full bloom.

While BIOELEMENTS LycoPlex Lip Gloss ($22) is crystal clear in the tube, this isn’t your garden variety gloss. Packed with Tomato Extract, LycoPlex Lip Gloss lightens and brightens the lips’ tone and texture, which in turn heightens your natural lip color. Bioelements’ signature LycoPlex formula also includes Rosemary Leaf Extract and Apricot Kernel Oil to sooth, soften and moisturize, Peppermint to revitalize and refresh, and the antioxidant Lycopene. Come spring, lips will be ripe for the kissin’!

After I slipped a coat of NVEY ECO Certified Organic Lip Treatment ($36) on my lips, they instantly looked dewy and fresh and took on a tint of bronze shimmer. Maybe it’s the product’s orange oil extract that imparts a hint of sunshine? This 2-in-1 moisturizer/lip treatment with its nourishing blend of Vitamin E, beeswax, calendula and shea and cocoa butters is worth the price of admission to this eco-friendly fantasy island. The slim and sleek black compact packaging with inside mirror is pretty hot too.

When you think of the words “cold cream”, images of grandma in a housecoat taking off her makeup may come to mind. Now forget what you know about cold cream and grab a dab of Avène Cold Cream Lip Balm ($11). It slides on like silky, butter cream frosting and takes on an icy shimmer that looks absolutely smokin’ with smoky eye makeup. Meantime, this prescription for protection is packed with Vitamins E and F and Avène’s Thermal Spring Water and Cold Cream formulas. The icing on the cake? A layer of balm lasts for hours on end.
