Gloss·a·ry – Nude Scene
By Michelle Carney

If you want to splash your summer with color, the eyes are where it’s at. Brilliant blues and vibrant purples are the season’s essentials. Nude lips seal the deal. As you know, going nude can be tricky. Pale shades that are lighter than your skin tone can wash you out, matte textures often make lips look smaller, and heavier cream lipsticks may fade into the lines on the lips, ruining the mood for nude altogether. Here’s a handful of neutral shades that offer a tint of summer color and shine and a few other tricks, so now your lips will look good naked.

The Body Shop’s shiny new Hot Brights 2009 collection includes a Bronze Lip Shine/Cheek Stain ($18) to give both cheeks and lips a ray of sunshine. This golden brown-with-a-twist-of-nearly-nude shimmer combo comes on natural but sophisticated. Make-up artist Chase Ashton advises “smoothing and blending the cheek stain over lips and on the apples of the cheeks for a long-lasting healthy, golden glow. Then apply the gloss over the lip stain for a fresh summer lip.”

Borghese’s Labbro Più Paffuto Lip Plumper is such a hit with lips, the label launched it in color. Labbro Più Paffuto Tinted Lip Plumper ($31.50) comes in three smooth and sheer shades, Flamingo Gold, Charme Naturale and Rosa Naturale – the nudish hue. The tinted glosses utilize the product’s same revolutionary dehydrated vegetable protein formula that penetrates and plumps using the lips’ own natural hydration. Plus, its claim to fame -- the plumper -- improves skin’s own elasticity and texture without stinging or redness. Available at Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdales and at starting June 23.

Glo Minerals, endorsed by plastic surgeons and skincare professionals for using pharmaceutical-grade ingredients with natural high-pigment minerals and antioxidants, is drawing up a new way to feel youthful. gloRoyal lip crayons ($16) remind us of the jumbo crayon you found every once in a while in the crayola tin. But instead of coloring inside the lines with Jazzberry Jam, these crayons fill lips with moisturizing, sheer gloss. In three beachy shades, Countess Coral, Imperial Pink and Empress Rose – a rosy-tinted nude. Don’t forget the gloRoyal lip crayon sharpener ($10), specially designed to sharpen to a round point without breaking, because there’s nothing worse than a broken crayon.

Sally Beauty’s got us thinking of crystal clear waters and sandy beaches with it’s Femme Couture Ultra Shine Lip Duo in Crystal Sand ($6.99). This double-team gets you in the nude with a light beige gloss tinged with peachy sparkle on one end and glassy clear on the other. Together, they’re like honey. And Sally’s not kidding when she says “ultra-shine.” It’s mega-wattage. Because this retailer has upped the ante on quality cosmetics (Femme Couture is a full collection of drug-store priced mineral makeup), you can afford to throw in a Sally Girl Mini Lip Gloss ($0.99) in Sugar, a smooth bare shine for a buck.
