Gloss·a·ry Feeding the Fetish
By Michelle Carney

It’s not as life-threatening as drugs, alcohol or smoking, but an addiction to lip sticks, glosses or balms is indeed a very real obsession. In fact Lip Balm Anonymous is dedicated to the addiction, as are other online groups like Facebook’s Addicted to lip balm like CRACK andAddicted to Burt's Bees.” A few tell-tale signs you’ve got a problem: You can’t walk by a cosmetics counter or through a drugstore without stopping to ogle the newest lip products on the shelf (and nine times out of 10 you buy one). You reapply more than three times a day. You have more than five lip products in your bag at any given time (and a shoebox full at home). But if you’re looking to detox, you’ve come to the wrong place. This month’s edition of the Gloss•a•ry celebrates a few chosen brands that happily feed our fetish.

Makeup industry vet and self-professed cosmetics junkie, Jody Cohen, created Cosmoholic Cosmetics ($20) liquid lipsticks because she was tired of having to use both to get the rich, creamy look of a stick with the shine of a gloss. And these vibrant colors really do glide on like a gloss and still deliver the long-lasting pigment of a lipstick. Free of paraben and fragrances, Cosmoholic packs in a veritable “repair kit” for lips formulated with macadamia nut oil for moisturizing as well Vitamin E and C and other antioxidants. On the surface, shades like Passionate Peach, Bossy Berry and Prudish Pink are shiny and slick, but not sticky or shimmery, with the exception of Gold Digger, the only shade that glitters.

beautyADDICTS isn’t shy about lip obsession, they put it right there at the top of the label. The brand’s collection of LUXELips lip shades ($18) and RelationLIPS lip quads ($28) package chic, high shine colors that have luxurious textures with nourishing shea butter, aloe vera and Vitamin E for protection. LUXElips’ unique gel formula’s “BA Complex” with MaxiLipTM let this stick slip on with a smooth, satiny finish, in Seduce (glamorous berry), Motivate (icy pale pink), Glow (sheer plum) and Express (in the buff).

RelationLIPS Quads house four blendable shades – a high-shine sheer, high-shine gloss, frosty shimmer and a matte stick – that can be worn in combination or alone, and come in the same color families as LUXElips.

Purple Labs attempts to feed your hunger for sexy lips by keeping fat off the hips with its innovative creation, Huge Lips Skinny Hips Lip Gloss ($20), a gloss that claims to curb your appetite. The secret weapon? Hoodia Gordoni Extract. Derived from a cactus-like plant mainly found in South Africa and Namibia, Hoodia is touted for its appetite-suppressing benefits mainly because its molecules mimic the effect glucose has on the brain, sending the message that you’re full, therefore less hungry.

Purple Labs’ Karen Robinovitz, who calls herself the “Creatrix” of the brand says, “The appetite really lives between the ears not in your stomach. This gloss always helps me stay mindful of what I'm eating and how and that is the purpose!” The formula also includes Vitamin B3 for lip plumping perfection, Meadow Foam for moisturizing and Lemon Peel oil for cooling. The collection’s six shades are inspired by Karen’s personal icons like Red Sole (as red as the bottom of a Louboutin heel), Love Your Thighs (a flirty coral and her personal mantra), Lychee Martini (a frothy peach and her favorite fruit) and Kitty Poledancer (the perfect nude and use your imagination). While we can’t promise you’re going to drop any LBs, you’ll definitely have fun trying. Available at B-Glowing.com and Beauty Mark (Canada).

Even the most critical gloss junkie is impressed with drugstore darling, L’Oreal HIP High Intensity Pigments Color Presso Lip Gloss ($13). In every dynamic duo comes two shades of intensely rich glosses that go on sleek and silky with no tacky texture. The gloss’ blendable, micro-particles are designed to bind and work together to create your very own custom shade. To use one, just squeeze that side gently; to mix squeeze both at once. Our faves: Spunky, Snazzy, Trendy and Posh.
