It’s A Spring Thing
When I think of spring, I think “time to get a fresh start” – on the closets, the clothes, the kitchen cabinets – everything in the house needs spring cleaning. This month, I’m applying the same attitude to my skin, “out with the old, in with the new.” And the same goes for our lips… haven’t they’ve suffered the same winter fate as the rest of our bodies, if not worse? If your lips need a little extra TLC, read on.
Start your lip makeover with SmartCover Anti-Aging Pick-Up Sticks ($10 each), a lip collection intended to stop the hands of time and make your lips look young again. Creator Celeb Makeup Artist Christina Smith, whose clients include Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Helen Mirren (I mean doesn’t she look fabulous?!), says start with the Lip Pumice Stick to remove dead skin, then apply the Tea Tree Oil Softening Stick to nourish and naturally soften lips. Next swipe on the Vitamin Beauty Stick packed with anti-oxidants like Vitamins A, B-6, C and E for minimizing wrinkles and smoothing fine lines. Now finish off with SmartCover's Lip Anti-Feathering Stick for controlling lines and creases before you apply lipstick, and the Lip Plumper Stick to give your pout plump perfection.
If your lips need a more serious Rx, try DermaQuest Skin Therapy C-Lipoic Lip Enhancer ($51). It’s a bit pricey but still less expensive than an injectable for a prescription-strength solution to perpetually dry, thin lips. The concentrated formula packs a powerful punch of Orange and Caffeine (for awakening circulation), Jojoba Seed Oil and Vitamin C (for intense hydration), Alpha Lipoic Acid (a nourishing antioxidant) and Palmitoyl Oligopeptide (for plumping the pucker). Plus this shiny gloss gives lips a subtle rosy tint, and it’s safe to use everyday.
Another alternative to clinical injections is HydroPeptide’s Lip Plumper Fuller Smoother ($38). This product promises immediate hydration and moisture that lasts all day as it gives lips a full, supple texture that’s lip-lock ready. Here’s how it works: Citrus Medica Limonum fruit extract maintains healthy capillary walls for better circulation, Tripeptide-29 boosts collagen and elastin to repair damaged skin and build volume, and Meadowfoam Estolide restores hydration and improves skin tone. Got doubts? Check out the results of a clinical study done on 36 women ages 21 to 65. After 10 minutes, 89% saw plumper lips, 97% saw smoother-looking lips, 94% saw fewer wrinkles within their lips, 100% felt their lips were instantly hydrated and 97% felt the condition of their lips had improved.
Here’s a cute, kitschy lip balm that’s just what the doctor ordered. Infused with Vitamins A, C and E for antioxidant protection and Kukui Nut Oil for deep penetration and quick absorption, Vanitymark’s DR. KISS Satin finish lip balm ($12) protects lips and hugs them with long-lasting moisture. The light blue balm comes packaged in a white and blue pill case, but as it slides on your lips start to turn a fresh shade of sheer pink. Magic! A touch of vanilla and peppermint give your kissing partner a lovely little bonus.
While we’re on the subject of getting fresh start, here’s a way you can look good while doing some good with LipFusion and Sephora’s “Kiss Away Poverty” campaign, launched by Kim Kardashian. One dollar from every gloss sold from the Luxe Boudoir Capsule Collection ($29) is donated to the Seven Bar Foundation, a philanthropy that gives women the tools they need to rise above poverty. From September to December 2009, the campaign raised more than $103,000. Now “Kiss Away Poverty” has been extended for another year. Available at Sephora stores and at fusionbeauty.com.
