“Green-eyed Girl” is PrettyCity’s monthly guide to the latest beauty products and treatment trends reflecting a consciousness for the environment and personal health. If it’s organic, we know about it; if it’s helping our environment while keeping us looking and feeling our best, we love it.
Organic Glam is an organic color collection from UK’s The Organic Pharmacy. The line, which is free of artificial preservatives and fragrances, calls upon minerals, herbal extracts and antioxidants. I’ve personally been using the eye shadow palette in “nude,” loose powder and Ultra Glossy Lip Plump in “honey sparkle” and recommend them all. The Lip Plump is short on petrochemicals, fragrances, colorants and preservatives – important since the average woman eats pounds of lipstick and gloss in a lifetime – but long on shine. That said, don’t let the “pharmacy” in the name fool you, products are priced like those found in high-end department stores, think $34.95 lip glosses, $67.95 loose powders, $29.95 eye pencils and more; all available at www.organicglam.com.
Apply these eco-friendly hues with a collection of earth-friendly makeup brushes called ecotools. The brushes boast bamboo handles and binding crafted of recycled aluminum cans. Plus, the actual bristles on each brush are taklon, rather than the animal bristles commonly used. Bonus: ecotools is a member of 1% For The Planet, a coalition whose members donate 1% of annual revenue to serve environmental causes. Best of all, the ecotools collection can help save you some green, too – a five piece brush set is just $9.99 at Walgreens.
Color Club’s Eco Chic lacquer collection is “Big 3 Free,” a phrase used to describe polishes that are free of Dibutyl Phthalate, Formaldehyde and Toluene. Best of all, Color Club’s “one and done” color collection serves up oh-so-pretty color with just one coat (available at salons). Believe it or not, you can even remove polish without harsh chemicals thanks to Priti Soy Based Polish Remover, an organic, acetone-free remover that is also biodegradable. Get it for $11.25 for 2 oz. at www.beautyhabit.com.
When it comes to “green” beauty, a company called NVEY ECO kicks it up a notch with a commitment to green standards in production, packages and ingredients of their Organic Food Chain Certified Organic cosmetic collection. The Eco Organic Eye Colour System combines Chamomile plus Vitamins A, C, and E in an easy-to-wear formula that glides on smoothly and stays put for hours. The palettes offer five blendable shades that complement each other flawlessly; sold for $61 at www.econveybeauty.com.
Should temps decide to head back up to a beach-friendly level anytime soon, be sure to pack my latest discovery in your tote bag. Smart Girls Who Surf is a natural sunscreen and skin care company out of Laguna Beach, CA that’s making waves. The chemical-free, paraben-free sunscreen is the crown jewel of the collection, which is produced in the USA and never tested on animals. I’m addicted to the Organic SPF 32 Sunscreen Face Stick ($14.99), a fragrance-free sunscreen that’s environmentally friendly and ideal for even the most sensitive of skin. Pick up the collection online at www.smartgirlswhosurf.com.
