| Green-eyed Girl: Celebs go green
to get gorgeous By Tess
Kurzeja Few people in the world can really be
called trendsetters or style icons. Those who can are often seen gracing the covers
of magazines or moving across our flatscreen TVs. Best of all, celebrities are
also going green by using grooming products that help keep the earth pretty and
animals safe. More and more, a consciousness for animal safety and treatment has
infused the beauty industry, often with your favorite star blazing the path for
the masses. From timeless models like Lauren Hutton to Hollywood’s
hottest stars such as Kate Hudson and Natalie Portman, celebrities are trademarking
their enviable beauty rituals while bearing in mind the safety of animals and
preservation of the planet. Luckily, these products are hitting the shelves and
are available to adorn our own medicine cabinets, beauty bags and closets.
Enviable
talent, beauty and style has set Kate Hudson apart in the past,
and her more recent movement to co-create and endorse natural, non-animal tested
products that are free of parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals and animal byproducts
is giving “green” with envy a new meaning. Partnering with stylist
David Babii, who shares Hudson’s passion for natural products and preventing
animal cruelty, the duo created a line of all natural products and styling tools
called David Babaii For WildAid that are housed in bottles made of all
recycled materials. Plus 10% of sales benefit WILDAID, a non-profit organization
working with governments and communities to reverse the devastation of wildlife
around the world.
The David Babaii For WildAid collection launched
on Earth Day 2008 and features safe, natural products that brought no harm to
animals in their production, with Hudson herself systematically testing each product
in lieu of animal testing. I love the David Babaii for WILDAID Amplifying
Volumizing Shampoo and Amplifying Volumizing Conditioner
($13.95 and $14.95 respectively) and their Recycled Flat Iron ($119)
available online at db4wildaid.com. While
Hudson has hair care in mind when it comes to animal-friendly products,
Natalie Portman turned her gaze downward creating a posh line
of vegan shoes for Té Casan New York. Frustrated by the lack of choices
in footwear for her vegan diet and fashion regimen, Portman took shoe matters
into her own hands. As a result, from ballet flats to sky-high heels, Portman
created an expansive collection of shoes made without leather, fur or other animal
byproducts, all the while keeping red-carpet fashion in mind. For lazy summer
days and relaxed outdoor luaus, Portman’s faux-suede Paine Grecian-inspired
sandal is a must while more formal affairs demand the Plath pump made
with satin and chiffon and boasting a 3 ¾” heel. Get them online
at tecasan.com from $250-400. As identifiable
as she is beautiful, Lauren Hutton has endured decades in the
modeling industry, gracing countless covers, walking designer runways, hosting
television shows and hitting the big screen looking flawless. At age 64, Hutton
is still active in the modeling world due, she says, to the makeup she has formulated
over the years and recently re- released in brand new, biodegradable containers.
Alongside her successful modeling and acting careers, Hutton has traveled the
world as an environment and animal rights activist since the 1960s. Aware of the
global waste problem and our reliance on landfills, Hutton worked diligently with
EcolGreen, an environmental materials company, to formulate biodegradable packaging
for her products. The
first product to launch in this new packaging is Hutton’s Weightless
Foundation. Formulated for mature skin, this pressed liquid foundation comes
in four shades with underlying base pigments that suit any skin type. Never
neglecting sophistication and glamour, Hutton’s biodegradable packaging
is attractive and compact. Hutton’s Weightless Foundation
is available online at laurenhutton.com
for $27. Although not every celeb creates their own product line to peddle,
many products hitting the shelves are decadent enough to become eco-conscious
staples for green-eyed girls who love to look great while doing good. I
love Treat Beauty’s cruelty free collection. Sans parabens and sulfates
and made of natural and organic raw materials, the O My Goodness Organic
Body Cream ($34) has a sweet, slightly floral scent and thick moisturizing
consistency that nourishes skin below the surface. Browse the entire collection

Serving up smooth,
application-friendly shea butter formulas, Solessence Skin care products use organic
ingredients and natural scents to moisturize skin. Cruelty free and sans parabens,
wheat and formaldehyde, Solessence’s Shea Shea Intense Unrefined Shea Butter
in Days of Wine and Roses imparts a layer of moisture and protection
that keeps harmful environmental pollutants from damaging skin ($16 at Solessence.com).
Green
products, with an emphasis on being cruelty free, are quickly becoming a consistent
component in conscious beauty products and fashion lines. So, whether it was made
by a celeb or is simply suitable for one, the most notable trends in celeb beauty
and fashion seem to also be the most notable trends in staying cruelty-free and
earth conscious.
“Green-eyed
Girl” is PrettyCity®’s monthly guide to the latest beauty products
and treatment trends reflecting a consciousness for the environment and personal
health. If it’s organic, we know about it; if it’s helping our environment
while keeping us looking and feeling our best, we love it. And, you can rest assured
we’ll tell you all about it. Please contact Tess
