It’s pretty easy to tear through $31 these days, whether
it’s that trip to the grocery store to pick up “a
few things,” or a detour to Walgreen’s on
the way home from the office. While you can’t always
justify these extraneous costs, you can feel good spending
that same $31 on one of several spa or salon treatments offered
at one of the several businesses participating in the
5th annual “Pretty in Pink”
event, presented by PrettyCity.com.
$31 for 31 days of beauty - the entire month
of October. We’re talking no chip manis, pedis,
haircuts, facials, waxes, personal training sessions and
more. Where does the pink come in? Each participating
salon and spa pays a fee to participate, which is
completely donated to bright
pink, a national non-profit providing education
and support to young women at risk for ovarian or breast cancer.

Since 2007, the Pretty in Pink campaign has
raised $20,000 every year for its charity partners. It began
in 2005 with 31 participants that raised $600.
Pretty in Pink expanded into the Milwaukee
market in 2007 with two participants, grew to five last year
and more than doubled that number this year.
“Milwaukee is a thriving area, far
too often overlooked in national campaigns, and we wanted
to spotlight this pretty city by expanding the program in
Greater Milwaukee,” said PrettyCity.com founder, Carolyn
Brundage. “We’re thrilled with the new partners
that have joined this project to support Bright Pink fundraising
as well as help build buzz for BCA Month by generously and
deeply discounting their services.”

With all this talk about thongs,
boyshorts and going commando, I'm beginning to think it's
time to go to the spa for a little body hair maintenance.
Thankfully, from now until the end of the month, we can pamper
ourselves for a cause. Spa and beauty website PrettyCity.com
is partnering with local spas and salons for Pretty
in Pink, 31 days of $31 spa services for breast cancer
awareness.
This year, proceeds benefit Be
Bright Pink, an organization that aims to educate young
women who are at high risk for breast or ovarian cancer. The
promotion runs until the end of the month, with select spas
and salons throughout the city and suburbs offering $31 deals
on everything from waxing, facials, acupuncture, highlights,
hair cuts, hot stone massage, teeth cleaning, nutrition consultation
and med spa treatments like spider vein removal.
I love to spa (in fact, I've freelanced for PrettyCity in
the past) and I've already received a pedi, am looking forward
to a facial next weekend and will likely squeeze in a lymphatic
drainage massage before the end of the month.
I truly believe that making time to pamper yourself is an
important part of a balanced lifestyle, especially for those
of us who are active and always on the go. If you've never
experienced a professional massage or pedicure, you deserve
it and it might just change your life. Besides, at these prices
and for such a great cause, we can all afford a little TLC.

A cause to celebrate
Each October my Web site, prettycity.com, raises awareness
and funds for breast cancer with a campaign called Pretty
in Pink. Local spas, salons and med spas offer deeply discounted
services — just $31 each — for the 31 days of
October. This year, Tampa area spas and salons are offering
massages, facials, pedicures and more for just $31 to benefit
Bright Pink, a nonprofit organization that provides education
and support to young women who are at high risk for breast
and ovarian cancer. Participating spas and salons pay a fee
to participate in the Pretty in Pink campaign, and 100 percent
of the money collected is donated to Bright Pink. Last year's
campaign raised $20,000. You can also support Bright Pink,
and your designer shopping addiction, by logging on to luxgoddess.com,
a shopping site that offers discounts on designer duds as
well as online coupons. Plus, luxgoddess.com supports the
fight against breast and ovarian cancer year-round by donating

Chicago salons and spas charge $31 services to honor
the 31 days of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Savvy and cause conscious? : The fourth annual Pretty in
Pink event is already well under way, so you should rush to
make that hair appointment and maybe squeeze in a little facial
while you can. Organized by Pretty City, an online company
that reviews and discounts spas and salons, several spas and
salons across the country will be offering their top-end services
for the discounted price of $31 to raise breast cancer awareness
and funds to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength during
the 31 days of October.
With over 50 participating spas and salons in the city and
suburbs, Chicago was also the first city to do Pretty in Pink
before the event and the company went national.
“It has become way more popular, but the campaign is
best known locally. Although we’re working hard to expand
it in additional states,” says Carolyn Brundage, CEO
of Pretty City. “When we started in 2005 we were aiming
to have 31 participating spas and salons. Now it’s
a lot more work. The donation we made last year was 10 percent
of our total annual profits, almost $22,000. As a small business,
it’s the biggest charity donation we do and something
that we feel good about.”
Brundage started the event after discovering the dollar amount
that goes directly to breast cancer charities from pink products
wasn’t much when researching for a beauty column.
“I was disheartened,” Brundage says. “I
wanted to do something that was completely transparent so
customers and participants would know that we donate 100 percent
of what we make from the event.”
From services that usually run from $65 to $350 like Brazilian
waxes, facials, peels, a range of hair treatments and even
laser hair removal, the event raises awareness and funds and
participating spa and salons are seeing an increasing flow
of new potential clientele.
“It exposes us in a good way,” says Jennifer
Channer, owner of Blueberry Moon, a salon and spa in Lincoln
Park, Chicago. “It’s a good opportunity to work
with a good cause and it also helps bring in new customers
that would like to try out the salon and hopefully, make that
transition to come into the salon full time.”
Not even midway into the event, Blueberry Moon has already
completely booked every appointment for its cinnamon roll
pedicure for the month, and their bikini wax, Swedish massage
and hair appointments are going fast too.
“I would call as soon as possible just because it is
remarkable how fast the services get reserved in advance,”
Channer says, who has participated in Pretty in Pink before
with other salons.
Noel Buican, owner of Aqua Salon located in Edgebrook, Chicago,
agrees whole-heartedly.
“We actually had people calling us before the event
launched to see if we were participating,” says Buican,
who is a first time participant. “People were really
anticipating this event.”
Aqua Salon is out of Saturday and evening appointments, but
a few morning and mid-afternoons are still up for the taking.
Despite the event’s little advertising, Pretty in Pink
is pushing a lot of people to spas and salons for high-end
services at a discounted rate and, most importantly, for a
good cause.
“It’s really spread via word of the mouth,”
Brundage says. “Every year it seems like it gets passed
virally from women telling other women who tell more women.
It’s more rewarding to know that people are spreading
the word—that’s what is moving this event.”

October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. All month
long, spas and salons across the country will offer $31 treatments

Cancer Awareness Foundation. So you can get laser hair removal,
mesotherapy, IPL, microdermabrasion, haircuts, pedicures and
