Summer's Top Three Beauty Trends

published 6/8/12

The official start of summer is just weeks away, and while summer staples like bronzer, gloss and SPF may reign over the classic summer makeup routine, we've rounded up three quick-and-easy ways to heat up your look with summer style.

Retro Glam

This summer, retro beauty takes to the beach and beyond. Designers including Jean Paul Gaultier and Christian Dior sent their latest collections down the runway paired with high-gloss, candy apple red lips  (via M.A.C. Pro Longwear Lipstick in "Lasting Lust" at Gaultier), defined liner on eyes and throw-back hair 'dos coiffed into victory rolls.  Retro glam extends to wardrobes too, with midriff-baring tops, high-waisted shorts and pinup style bathing suits de rigueur for summer.

One of the most wearable ways to go retro is by embracing cat eyes, the feline-inspired liquid liner look seen on celebs from Angelina Jolie to Alicia Keys.

Get the look by applying liquid, gel or cream liner in black or dark brown, starting near the outer lash line and extending beyond the outer corner of the eye with a slight upward angle towards the brow line. Liner should extend just beyond the outer corner of eyes and increase in thickness from the start of the line to the end.

Red, Red Wine

If a major makeover isn't on the agenda for summer, you can still update your look with a quick lipstick change that puts summer style right on trend. Wine-stained lips sashayed down runways from Donna Karan to Dior. Wearable for all, the key to pulling off this berry beauty trend is finding a shade that complements and sticking with matte, rather than glossy, finishes.

Pale complexions are perfectly paired with hues of cranberry, one to try is Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstain in Cranberry Crush. Medium skin tones are well-suited to darker shades of burgundy, such as Dior Addict Lipstick in Pinstripe Plum 8. Dark skin works well with many hues including deep wines and even berry colored browns; one to try is Yves Saint-Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain in #1 Violet Edition.  No matter your lip color of choice, be sure to apply dark lipsticks to soft, smooth lips as dry, cracked lips will be highlighted by wine-stained hues.

Brightly Lacquered Lids

Shadow may not have been literally painted on, but at many a spring/summer ready-to-wear show brightly hued lids appeared as fresh as a first coat of paint.

Moschino Cheap and Chic sent models down the runway in lids awash with bright shadows in shades of aqua and purple while Vivienne Westwood's creative team adorned models in eye-popping orange and yellow. To take this look from runway to real world, be sure to keep bright shadow below the crease without extending color to the brow bone. And don't make the mistake of matching your shadow to your shirt or dress, bright eyes should complement, not match, attire.

Get the look with M.A.C.'s Reel Sexy Collection Summer 2012, in shades of coral, purple and pink. The Smashbox "Shades of Fame" Eye Shadow Palette for Summer 2012 boasts a bevy of shades from bright aqua to crisp coral and beyond, $48.

Budget-minded beauties can get the look at local drugstores thanks to Maybelline's new Color Tattoo 24 HR Cream Gel Shadow, sold for about $7 at local drugstores and available in 10 haute hues including "Tenacious Teal" and "Painted Purple."
